Celebrity All-Car Showdown

Celebrity All-Car Showdown

Shaquille O’Neal of the L.A. Lakers introduces the eventual "King of Bling" winner, the 2003 Hummer H2 of teammate Bryon Russell, at GM’s All-Car Showdown.
Celebrities are accustomed to sharing the red carpet—with each other. Typically they don’t share the spotlight with 5,000-plus-pound "stars" made of sheet metal, glass and rubber. Unless, of course, the glittering vehicles are their own rides—customized to the hilt—and the event is General Motors Corporation’s first All-Car Showdown.
The event, which was part of the buzz at this year’s NBA All-Star game, took place at a studio lot in Hollywood and was hosted by Shaquille O’Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers. Stars such as rapper Snoop Dogg, actors Beverley Mitchell and Frankie Muniz, as well as pro athletes including Bryon Russell of the Lakers and Az-Zahir Hakim of the NFL’s Detroit Lions opened their private garages and brought their custom rides to vie for the first "King of Bling" award.

What a competition it was.
Among the 24 vehicles that paraded down the red carpet in front of judges, host Shaq and masters of ceremonies Fuzzy Fantabulous and Joe Grande of Power 106 radio in Los Angeles were late-model Hummers and Cadillacs, and a few classic cars from the ‘50s and ‘60s that took automotive accessorizing to new heights.
Wheel Wonders
All had flashy, expensive wheels—the bigger the better on the Hummers. "Oooh," Shaq said, as the 2003 H2 owned by Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody drove up. Shaq, no stranger to big wheels, couldn’t take his eyes off the 28-inch, chrome wheels and Kumho tires that were on Brody’s Hummer. The vehicle’s standard 17-inch wheels were nowhere to be seen. A nice added touch: a spinner spare wheel at the back of Brody’s H2.
It turns out the 28-inch wheels—the biggest available—were just starting to arrive on the market. Combined with low-profile tires, the package could retail for as much as an entire car, or approximately $26,000 for a set of four, according to Myles Kovacz, publisher of DUB magazine of Los Angeles which showcases stars and their custom cars.
"I think a lot of athletes and prominent people in the urban culture have been doing this for years," Kovacz said. "But 10 years ago, you were either a thug or a drug dealer (if you accessorized your vehicles like this.) Today, it’s socially acceptable to drive these vehicles. We’re the modern day coachbuilder or hot rodder. And we’re doing it with a new twist. It’s now part of youth culture. It’s one of those things that has become cool."
Fancy wheels aren’t the only expensive, custom touches on the stars’ cars.

That’s Entertainment
Entertainment screens were everywhere and often could be found embedded in head restraints as well as on the ceilings and in the middle of the dashboards. A 2002 Cadillac Escalade owned by Frankie Muniz, star of television’s Malcolm in the Middle, includes a 10-inch display screen among the five screens inside, said Ron Canyon, president of Canyon Motors in Los Angeles, which sells and customizes cars for stars. Canyon was previously affiliated with 310 Motoring, the company that customized Muniz’s vehicle.
Muniz’s entertainment options in this special Escalade, whose previous owner was Penny Hardaway of the New York Knicks, is a Sony PlayStation. Newer models now get Microsoft’s Xbox, Canyon added. Muniz’s light blue ‘Slade went on to win best interior at the GM event, and a beaming Muniz said it was totally unexpected and "awesome."
Sound and entertainment systems can start "from about $8,000 and go up from there," said Kenny Fong, president of the Chatsworth, Calif.-based Darkside Motoring that customized Brody’s H2 and a couple other competing vehicles. "It really depends on how extravagant you want to be," he said.
Indeed, some stereo systems in the stars’ vehicles included huge clusters of built-in speakers. O’Neal’s 2002 Cadillac Escalade, for example, literally has a wall of speakers behind the second-row seats and a system capable of 5,000 watts of sound.
Fashion Statements
Then there are the new materials being used for seats and door trim on these custom vehicles. In many of the stars’ vehicles, factory-installed fabric headliners—the material that covers the ceilings inside vehicles—were replaced by thick suede, and seats had custom coverings and detail. Shaq’s Escalade, for example, had the Superman logo stitched onto the seats.
"It’s definitely fashion," Kovacz said. "There’s Vuitton and Gucci interiors now. These are the things that are transcending fashion to the cars."
Perhaps the most ostentatious touch was the real mink trimming the leather seats inside rapper Snoop Dogg’s Cadillac sedan which he had christened the "Snoop DeVille."
Kovacz noted that custom work inside a vehicle isn’t as readily visible to others as are the wheels and custom paint jobs.
Indeed, GM’s winner for best exterior was a brilliant blue H2 owned by Chris Claiborne of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings that had chrome accents everywhere, from the running boards to brush guard. Even the skid plates under the truck are chrome-covered, according to Canyon, who added the work was done by 310 Motoring.
Canyon, whose customer list is about 30 pages long and includes actors Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Denzel Washington and singers Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, said Claiborne’s Hummer wore a "Mercedes blue" paint color. Celebrities "like the Mercedes and Bentley colors," Canyon added.
King of Bling
It’s not just the flashy stuff that’s important to this high-brow clientele. The top "King of Bling" vehicle of GM’s evening—a darker blue H2 owned by the Lakers’ Russell—had real craftsmanship, said Jeff Kuhlman, director of communications at Cadillac and one of the judges. "Most of these cars had style to draw in the eye," he said. "So (the differentiator) had to be in the detail."
Peter MacGillivray, vice president of marketing and communications at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association of Diamond Bar, Calif., believes celebrities are helping popularize the already-burgeoning, multibillion-dollar auto accessory market.
"They are media celebrities, and they make it cool," MacGillivray said. "They influence popular culture. They influence art. They influence fashion and music. They sing about their cars . . . and they motivate a whole lot of people."

Celebrity Car for Sale: Microsoft Legend

Celebrity Car for Sale: Microsoft Legend

How would you like to own a car that belonged to a co-founder of Microsoft? No, not Bill Gates (everyone knows he crushes his cars at the end of the day, much like how Michael Jordan never wore the same pair of basketball shoes twice). I’m talking Paul Allen’s 1995 Ferrari 456 GT, an absolute beauty of a car that is currently up for auction.

Own the Parade
There’s little that ranks higher in Silicon Valley than driving the Ferrari of a Microsoft co-founder.
Since the above was written, the auction has ended, so you will have to find another ride to impress the tech world. Perhaps a former Google Street View Cam-Car, which I hear are real hot right now?

50 Cent Serenades a Pontiac

50 Cent Serenades a PontiacEarlier today at the New York Auto Show Pontiac G8 reveal, the lights dimmed, a disco ball descended, and 50 Cent walked on stage singing Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” to the strings of the New York Philharmonic. I haven’t seen a room full of automotive journalists that teary since Ford towed 12,000 lbs. worth of diced onions on stage for the F-450 Super Duty launch. If you can’t tell, they keep me locked in the Media Room during auto shows, so I actually have no idea what really happens at these things.

We are a car driven society, or should that be, a society that drives cars?
Whatever, there are cars all over; the streets are full of them, which makes sense.
Here in Vegas, where you can find anything, there is every manner of vehicle on the streets and roads, from the most humble, utilitarian people mover, to lavish Rolls Royce’s and Ferrari’s.
Ever since L.A. opened its floodgates and swarms of car crazy people moved from there to here, we have every manner of monstrosity plying the streets. High riders, low riders, monster trucks, tricked out Hondas with loud aftermarket exhaust systems, innumerable pickup trucks and giant SUV’s that never carried more than a grocery bag, and the ubiquitous BMW’s are everywhere, going nowhere, in a hurry.
I even saw a pickup truck taxicab once. That must be available to accommodate the "windshield cowboys" that blow into town for the year-end rodeo championships.
Of course celebrities drive too, and they ain’t buying any Chevy’s.
Last week I had a promotional twofer for the buffet at a recently opened casino, and like Homer Simpson, if there’s free food, I’m there.
My wife decided to let me drive, so I wouldn’t forget how, and after the short trip to the casino parking garage I eased the Sonata into a space almost next to the elevator.
As we walked to the elevator I commented on how well our car fit in with the Mercedes, Porsches, Escalades, Jaguar’s, BMWs, Lexis, and what I thought was the coolest Dodge I ever saw, until my wife informed me that it was a Bentley.
Now these are the kinds wheels that celebrities drive, as this article reveals.
Check out, "The Dupont Registry," for a look at more of the upscale and eclectic cars driven by celebrities.
This magazine, with its classy, expensive sounding name, has some great photos, like the one of Anastasia Ashley, who looks like a great ride too.
Of course some celebrities disdain the lavish, high horsepower examples of conspicuous consumption, and opt for the newest in alternative vehicles as this article and, this story point out.
Sometimes a car just isn’t enough and if you have the bucks, as does Joss Stone, you can shell out about $180,000 to take your grandfather to The World Cup, as she did.
Oh, the free casino meal was great by the way, and wasn’t in the least bit diminished by the fact that I had pissed away 50 cents in an obviously defective slot machine. As I belched my way back to our car, I again admired the vehicles ours was nestled among, and then my wife noticed a ticket under the windshield wipers.
It seems that I had parked in an area reserved for high rollers. There was no fine, but the ticket noted that our plate number was now "in their system" and another infraction would bring a tow truck.
I’ll remember that the next time I get a twofer for that place and use my old New Jersey plates instead.

Patrick Dempsey takes his vintage Jaguar XK120 for a spin around the streets of Los Angeles yesterday. Patrick, an avid car buff, is a co-owner of Vision Racing in the open-wheel Indy Racing League. Dr. McDreamy is back in L.A. after a trip to his home state of Main last week to announce the opening of the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Patrick worked out plans for his involvement in the center during the recent writer`s strike, but now that the strike is over, the Grey…

Celebs in Cars

Celebs in CarsCheck out Jen and Vince trying to hide form the cameras late last night. They got a snack at 2am and Vince literally tries to duck his head down as far as he can. Everyone was trying to get Jen’s reaction since the big Angelina Brad Baby news yesterday. She seems to be just fine to me.

As for Christina and Jordan, the married couple went for a nice dinner out in Santa Monica. As usual, she never leaves home without her red lipstick. It amazes me that more accidents don’t happen as the celebs try to drive off with flashing cameras in their faces. I just think it’s funny we get so many of these types of shots. I’m still satisfied.

Stars & their Cars: Madonna

Madonna and her carsSince moving to London in 2001, Madonna has run up against one of the biggest problems that afflict car-owners in the capital city: where to park your car – or cars in her case.
Stars & their Cars: Madonna
The singer, who is worth an estimated £235 million, has had a practiced routine starting last year of attending an exclusive gym in the up-market St John’s Wood area for twice weekly sessions. She is taken there from her home in a chauffeur-driven limousine, which waits for outside – whereupon the parking wardens pounce. Although the driver does his best to keep moving, this is not always enough. Her cars are thought to have received over fifty tickets since, racking up fines of a minimum of £2,500 – £50 per ticket. If tickets are not paid within 14 days, the fines rise to £100, potentially doubling Madonna’s outlay. A spokesman for Westminster City Council, the local authority, was unapologetic however.
"If our attendants are aware that a certain person is parking illegally regularly, they will be targeted. Whether that person is you, or I, or Madonna, they will get fined. By keeping the car moving the driver is skating on very thin ice. The warden could easily argue that although he is moving, he is actually occupying the same space over a period of time."
Madonna’s father was a successful motor engineer, and cars-wise Madonna owns – or has owned – the usual plutocratic coellection you might think, including a BMW 7-Series, an Audi A8, and a £270,000 Maybach super-limousine. What is less well known that he is a great fan of the new Mini – she owns a Cooper S, complete with sat-nav to guide her around her new adopted town. In homage to the car, in her song "American Life" she sings "I drive my Mini Cooper and I feel Super Dooper." Other celebrity Mini owners include Sting, Goldie Hawn and Elijah Wood.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his cars

March 22, 2008

Arnold Schwarzenegger – one of the most exciting figures in our country and throughout the world! Nowadays, he is the Governor of California, an action-movie star and he is fed up with paparazzi as well. As for, when somebody pronounces this name I already imagine a big, handsome man with weapon, and on the Hammer jeep. To my mind, Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsthey are best friends and can’t live one without another! Let’s find pot whether it is true or not!

Just have a look at Arnold! Is it possible to associate him with small and cute Nissan Micra or reliable Audi A4? Of course, no. He is a tough guy and a hard nut to crack, his car must practical, without any useless show off, powerful, has a great speed, it must be unique as well, has some resemblance to military cars but at the same time be civilian and close to people. Since 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger have been admiring with jeeps and in the course of time, he succeeded to make a deal with AM General (that is now part of General Motors) to make a simple, more friendly version of military car. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsAnd they met his requirements with creating the H1. Later this company made some developments and manufactured something completely new, extremely giant and very practical – H2. But the Governor was still insistent and has an idea to make his image more friendly, so there appeared the H2H.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsAfter, this period of Humming on Hummers. Schwarzenegger paid attention to his old Ferrari 360 Spider. As we already know, Ferraries are very expensive and they can show the statues of their owner much better than any Hummer. But, unfortunately, this glam and fashionable car, doesn’t fit his image of the Governor, a man of the people. It can make them to be against Arnold.

 Arnold Schwarzenegger and his cars

However, it is not the end. In March 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger bought a brand-new to America car, if it is possible to say so about an Austrian six-wheeled tank. Actually, it is called Pinskower! This tank was specially modified for Schwarzenegger be able to drive it legally.

Stars & their Cars: David Beckham

March 21, 2008

David Beckham and his carsDavid Beckham is off to the USA, having accepted an offer of around $1m a week from Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy – so it’s high time to look at David Beckham’s gargantuan car collection.
He has so many cars that apparently when the chairman of Ferrari offered him one of their cars early in 2005 he actually turned the offer down. Beckham owns over seven cars, including a custom built Ferrari, a Porsche 911, a Range Rover, a Jaguar, a Bentley, and a Rolls-Royce Phantom. One of his first notable cars was a 1996 BMW M3, which he owned back when we has a moderately well-known rising star of the Manchester United squad. This car was later sold for a whopping £90,000 on eBay. The same model, not owned by Beckham, recently sold for only £11,000 and you could probably purchase a brand new BMW M3 for well under the weekly wage of your average globe-trotting Galactico.

The star likes to park his fleet in restricted, valeted parking bays. One of his more recent acquisitions was a £110,000 Lamborghini Gallardo. He does keep a few sensible cars though, including a David Beckham and his carsMercedes S500 and a Bentley Arnage, which he used to pick up his OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2004. The car comes complete with leather baby-seats. Neither David nor his wife Victoria want the children to be left out, and for Christmas last year their son Brooklyn, five, was given a £22,000 Hummer H2 car for Christmas. They snapped up a scaled-down version of the vast US 4×4 owned by his father, apparently because the boy loves to imitate his dad.

Beckham bought a £55,000 H2 only recently, and added £18,000 of luxury extras. Victoria apparently sDavid Beckham and his carspotted the scaled-down version while Christmas shopping in Harrods and thought it would be perfect for the five-year-old. A source said: "Brooklyn loves being like his dad. If David gets a new haircut he wants the same style. And having the same car is another way to be as cool as dad. He gets really excited when his dad buys a new car and always wants to copy him. David and Victoria love treating the boys. As soon as Victoria saw the Hummer she knew it would be the perfect gift for Brooklyn." The scaled-down H2 joins a scaled-down BMW Z4, Ferrari and a Porsche in Brooklyn’s bedroom. He has had his fair share of car trouble too; following a reputed kidnap attempt, he purchased an armoured BMW X5 SUV in Madrid, but it was promptly stolen. He bought another one, and it was nicked as well; it was recovered recently in Macedonia, apparently being driven by Bulgarian people-traffickers; he’ll certainly be hoping his motoring goes more smoothly out in LA.

    * What do you think of David Beckham’s car collection? Has he got it right or could you do better? L
