Footballer Wayne Rooney had to be rescued from the motorway after he filled up new wife Coleen’s ?90,000 car with the wrong kind of fuel.

The 23-year-old called out a motorway patrol after after the car broke down on a motorway in Cheshire on Monday evening.

He was travelling eastbound on the M62 when he had to pull into the hard shoulder in the ?90,000 customised Range Rover Sport V8.

He had filled up the tank of the turbo-diesel engine with unleaded petrol.

It is thought Manchester United striker Rooney was alone in the car and was heading back to his home in Prestbury after visiting his family in Liverpool when the incident happened in the evening rush hour.

One motorist who passed the scene said: ‘It’s a very busy section of the motorway and the traffic was running quite slow so we got a good look.

‘The hazard lights were flashing on the car and Wayne was standing talking to a Highways Agency patrol driver. He looked pretty sheepish.

Rooney owns a string of luxury cars including a Lamborghini Gallardo, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M6 and Aston Martin Vanquish, with a joint value of more than ?1million.

it is thought the cost of flushing the petrol out of the diesel engine and putting the 4×4 back on the road will be more than ?1000.

The Highways Agency declined to comment on the incident.

However now that the 48-year-old has swopped his sunroof for an open faced crash helmet he may have to find another group to dislike.

But she’s said to have splashed out on a £70,000 on a Mercedes CLS for her husband Mark Croft, 37.

‘It was her birthday, not his, but she’s extremely generous when it comes to Mark – which is baffling because she’s skint,’ a source tells the Sunday People.

It is thought the mum-of-4 negotiated a deal with a finance company that arranges loans for buyers with a poor credit history.

Kerry, 28, is said to own a fleet of 20 cars worth over £1 million.
