Celebrity Car Parade - Owen Wilson

May 14, 2008

Hollywood does drive them. Toyota Prius owners? Owen Wilson (right), Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Tom Hanks for starters. That said, for every Prius I see in Hollywood, I see two Range Rovers, three G-Wagons, and five Escalades. But hey, welcome to the Parade!

Just out of curiosity, I totaled up the cost of two Range Rovers, three G-Wagons, and five Escalades: Around $680,000. Cost of a Prius? About $21,000. Who said hybrids don’t make economic sense!

Celebrity Car Parade - Prince Charles

May 11, 2008

First, congrats Prince Charles for being a responsible leader and driving a Honda Civic Hybrid in public. Shame on you Honda, however, for ever painting a car in such a manner, hybrid or not. You have set back the hybrid image at least five years and completely washed away any notion I had about royal dignity.

I encourage you to buy a Civic and try this at home. Don’t blame me if you blind yourself.

Celebrities & Cars - Rosamund Pike

May 10, 2008

Bond bad girl Rosamund Pike, who played the fit Olympic fencer and double agent Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, is at Waddesdon Manor to pick the car she would like to drive home in. She, far more than fellow judges at the Louis Vuitton Classic like Yasmin Le Bon and Jodie Kidd, is in desperate need of a set of wheels.

"Right now I don’t have any car at all," reveals Pike as we stroll down a millionaire’s row of cars. "In fact I’ve not had a car in the four years since I got my licence. I rent one when I need one and in London that’s not very often."

The irony of her situation is not lost on her. The grand driveway leading to the house is awash with some of the most iconic cars ever made. Her recent Hollywood standing means she could afford most of this automotive eye candy. But she is holding out for, in car terms, Mr. Right. To be more precise, she knows who Mr. Right is but hasn’t yet found the perfect specimen.

"I am looking for a Citroen DS. I have been on the internet but so far I haven’t found the one I want," explains Rosamund with mild defence. Her discomfort is understandable. Here she is, car-less, in a gathering of people like Jay Kay who own dozens. A quizzical look from her audience prompts a brief dissertation on the subject of the boat-like DS from the Oxford-educated, cello-playing erudite.

"I want one because it is beautiful, because the view is panoramic and because it is a design classic," she expands with a ripple of excitement for her dream machine. "It is a romantic car I think. From a style point of view. Have you not read Roland Barthes essay on the DS?"

Just in case you have not studied the 1957 work on the then revolutionary Citroen here is an excerpt: ‘The D.S. – the "Goddess" – has all the features of one of those objects from another universe which have supplied fuel for the neomania of the eighteenth century and that of our own science-fiction: the Deesse is first and foremost a new Nautilus.’

Rosamund has studied the subject of her impending purchase like a punter clutching their form guide at Glorious Goodwood or an art collector perusing the auction rooms. One thing she did not know is that the car’s hydro-pneumatic suspension means it is one of the few cars the clampers cannot ensnare with their Denver Boots. That will be a bonus for the Chelsea resident.

"That’s good," says Rosamund, who once described parking meters and their ridiculous four-minutes-for-20p tariff as her pet hate. "I am not just thinking of it as a runabout. It’s a car with a sense of occasion."

Stars & their Cars: Madonna

Madonna and her carsSince moving to London in 2001, Madonna has run up against one of the biggest problems that afflict car-owners in the capital city: where to park your car – or cars in her case.
Stars & their Cars: Madonna
The singer, who is worth an estimated £235 million, has had a practiced routine starting last year of attending an exclusive gym in the up-market St John’s Wood area for twice weekly sessions. She is taken there from her home in a chauffeur-driven limousine, which waits for outside – whereupon the parking wardens pounce. Although the driver does his best to keep moving, this is not always enough. Her cars are thought to have received over fifty tickets since, racking up fines of a minimum of £2,500 – £50 per ticket. If tickets are not paid within 14 days, the fines rise to £100, potentially doubling Madonna’s outlay. A spokesman for Westminster City Council, the local authority, was unapologetic however.
"If our attendants are aware that a certain person is parking illegally regularly, they will be targeted. Whether that person is you, or I, or Madonna, they will get fined. By keeping the car moving the driver is skating on very thin ice. The warden could easily argue that although he is moving, he is actually occupying the same space over a period of time."
Madonna’s father was a successful motor engineer, and cars-wise Madonna owns – or has owned – the usual plutocratic coellection you might think, including a BMW 7-Series, an Audi A8, and a £270,000 Maybach super-limousine. What is less well known that he is a great fan of the new Mini – she owns a Cooper S, complete with sat-nav to guide her around her new adopted town. In homage to the car, in her song "American Life" she sings "I drive my Mini Cooper and I feel Super Dooper." Other celebrity Mini owners include Sting, Goldie Hawn and Elijah Wood.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his cars

March 22, 2008

Arnold Schwarzenegger – one of the most exciting figures in our country and throughout the world! Nowadays, he is the Governor of California, an action-movie star and he is fed up with paparazzi as well. As for, when somebody pronounces this name I already imagine a big, handsome man with weapon, and on the Hammer jeep. To my mind, Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsthey are best friends and can’t live one without another! Let’s find pot whether it is true or not!

Just have a look at Arnold! Is it possible to associate him with small and cute Nissan Micra or reliable Audi A4? Of course, no. He is a tough guy and a hard nut to crack, his car must practical, without any useless show off, powerful, has a great speed, it must be unique as well, has some resemblance to military cars but at the same time be civilian and close to people. Since 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger have been admiring with jeeps and in the course of time, he succeeded to make a deal with AM General (that is now part of General Motors) to make a simple, more friendly version of military car. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsAnd they met his requirements with creating the H1. Later this company made some developments and manufactured something completely new, extremely giant and very practical – H2. But the Governor was still insistent and has an idea to make his image more friendly, so there appeared the H2H.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his carsAfter, this period of Humming on Hummers. Schwarzenegger paid attention to his old Ferrari 360 Spider. As we already know, Ferraries are very expensive and they can show the statues of their owner much better than any Hummer. But, unfortunately, this glam and fashionable car, doesn’t fit his image of the Governor, a man of the people. It can make them to be against Arnold.

However, it is not the end. In March 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger bought a brand-new to America car, if it is possible to say so about an Austrian six-wheeled tank. Actually, it is called Pinskower! This tank was specially modified for Schwarzenegger be able to drive it legally.

Stars & their Cars: David Beckham

March 21, 2008

David Beckham and his carsDavid Beckham is off to the USA, having accepted an offer of around $1m a week from Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy – so it’s high time to look at David Beckham’s gargantuan car collection.
He has so many cars that apparently when the chairman of Ferrari offered him one of their cars early in 2005 he actually turned the offer down. Beckham owns over seven cars, including a custom built Ferrari, a Porsche 911, a Range Rover, a Jaguar, a Bentley, and a Rolls-Royce Phantom. One of his first notable cars was a 1996 BMW M3, which he owned back when we has a moderately well-known rising star of the Manchester United squad. This car was later sold for a whopping £90,000 on eBay. The same model, not owned by Beckham, recently sold for only £11,000 and you could probably purchase a brand new BMW M3 for well under the weekly wage of your average globe-trotting Galactico.

The star likes to park his fleet in restricted, valeted parking bays. One of his more recent acquisitions was a £110,000 Lamborghini Gallardo. He does keep a few sensible cars though, including a David Beckham and his carsMercedes S500 and a Bentley Arnage, which he used to pick up his OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2004. The car comes complete with leather baby-seats. Neither David nor his wife Victoria want the children to be left out, and for Christmas last year their son Brooklyn, five, was given a £22,000 Hummer H2 car for Christmas. They snapped up a scaled-down version of the vast US 4×4 owned by his father, apparently because the boy loves to imitate his dad.

Beckham bought a £55,000 H2 only recently, and added £18,000 of luxury extras. Victoria apparently sDavid Beckham and his carspotted the scaled-down version while Christmas shopping in Harrods and thought it would be perfect for the five-year-old. A source said: "Brooklyn loves being like his dad. If David gets a new haircut he wants the same style. And having the same car is another way to be as cool as dad. He gets really excited when his dad buys a new car and always wants to copy him. David and Victoria love treating the boys. As soon as Victoria saw the Hummer she knew it would be the perfect gift for Brooklyn." The scaled-down H2 joins a scaled-down BMW Z4, Ferrari and a Porsche in Brooklyn’s bedroom. He has had his fair share of car trouble too; following a reputed kidnap attempt, he purchased an armoured BMW X5 SUV in Madrid, but it was promptly stolen. He bought another one, and it was nicked as well; it was recovered recently in Macedonia, apparently being driven by Bulgarian people-traffickers; he’ll certainly be hoping his motoring goes more smoothly out in LA.
